Sometimes, we may experience inconvenience when visiting our favorite websites that we usually use and visit. You might found out that the website you visit is temporarily unavailable but you aren’t sure if that website is really down or it is just you who are experiencing the unavailability of that website. You may be wondering how to know if a website is down.
There are different ways to know if a website is down. This article will help you determine whether a website is really down or it’s just you.
Here are several ways you could try to test if a website is really down.
Use other computers
This method is the first method most of us will try to determine if a website is really down. If you are experiencing downtime for a website, you usually ask your friend if he or she is also experiencing that downtime. If you have different devices in your home or in your office, you can try accessing the unavailable website from different devices. In case you don’t have another computer to use for testing a website, you can try the next method.
Using a VPN
You can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to use different IP address and try to access the website that is unavailable to you. VPN is a technology that creates a safe and encrypted connection over a less secure network, such as the internet. It also allows you to access the internet from different locations. If the website is still unavailable even if you use a VPN, well, the website is really down. You can try Express VPN to start using a Virtual Private Network now.
Using PING command
PING is a method of sending a query from one computer to another in order to determine whether your computer can communicate with another computer across a network. It can be used to know if there is a connection with websites. To use PING command in Windows Operating System, you must open your command line and start typing this command: ping www.feelingtechie.com or whatever website you want to test and press enter. After pressing enter from the keyboard, you should see a message printed in your command line that says “Pinging www.examplewebsite.com with 32 bytes of data”. You will then see four lines of texts that begin with “Reply from…” if the site is up. But if the site is down, you will see “Request timeout” message.
Using website services
There are websites that offer services to check if a certain website is down or not. There are three highly-recommended websites you can use namely, down.com, downforeveryoneorjustme.com (also known as isup.me), and isitdownrightnow.com. This method is my favorite and I usually prefer this method over the other methods I’ve listed in this article.
